A letter to the Residents of Pittsburgh and surrounding Communities:

If you have not already seen us out there, this letter is to introduce you to the Pittsburgh Paddlefish Women’s Dragon Boat Team. We are a competitive team and our women’s boat was recently awarded an invitation to represent Pittsburgh and the U.S. Eastern Region in the 2008 Dragon Boat Festival in Penang, Malaysia.

For a young team, we have already achieved much success and hope that you will celebrate with us. In 2005, three of our women paddlers were invited to the World Dragon Boat Championship Races, Grand Masters Class, in Berlin Germany. In the summer of 2007, one of our women received an invitation to represent the United States Women’s Grand Master Team (age 50+) in the World Cup Dragon Boat competition in Sydney, Australia. For 2008, our entire team won the invitation to Penang.

Our workouts include paddling for endurance training, weight training, core-training, and aerobic training. We have rigorous paddling workouts in the boat on the Allegheny river three times per week during the spring, summer and fall, and continue training indoors throughout the winter as well. The women on our team are diverse, dedicated, and inspirational. They seem to represent the enduring vitality of the City of Pittsburgh itself.

To send our team to Penang (26 women are needed), it is crucial that we have the support of the Pittsburgh community. We have launched our Buy a Bench for the ‘Burgh campaign to garner community support for this competitive opportunity. We hope we can count on you to consider the sponsorship levels listed here.

Your sponsorship is a tax-deductible donation and will include (upon our victorious return from Penang) a free dragon boat ride for up to 10 staff people followed by a picnic/barbeque at the Three Rivers Rowing boathouse in Millvale along the Allegheny River. This will be an opportunity for you to experience the teamwork required and the excitement involved when paddling in a dragon boat! We will also proudly display our sponsors’ names and logos on team t-shirts and publicity materials.

The Three Rivers are a unique asset for the City of Pittsburgh and we treasure our beautiful practice venue. The Pittsburgh Paddlefish are just one testament to the resilience of Pittsburgh and why we are the “Most Livable City”.

Donation checks can be made out to “TRRA/Pittsburgh Paddlefish”, and can be sent to TRRA at 300 Waterfront Dr, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. If you have any questions or would like to discuss our ‘Buy a Bench’ Campaign in more detail, please email our team at: pghpfish@gmail.com

With sincere thanks,

The Pittsburgh Paddlefish Women’s Dragon Boat Team
